e-citizen is great for people that are new to computers and is a good starting point to enable people to get online for the first time. It includes important life enhancing online skills such as getting access to government services, communicating via email and web services, banking and shopping online and searching for information.
Whether you want to get online on your PC at home or occasionally use a computer in your day to day role at work, e-Citizen will be of great benefit to you to gain some basic computer and online skills.This can help you to use and understand intranets and gain access to online information that can enhance your life, such as researching about pensions, health and safety and completing tax forms online.
The e-citizen qualification has already been a great success with people of all ages and in all walks of life, as well as in local authorities, trade unions and large industrial organisations.
Block 1 – Foundation Skills.
This gives the candidate the necessary skills and knowledge for basic computer and internet use.
1.1 The Computer
Identify the main parts of the computer. Switching on and shutting down the computer. Use the keyboard and Mouse. Work with icons and windows on the desktop.
1.2 Files and Folder
View, copy, move and delete files & folders. Recognise different file types. Create a new document.
1.3 Simple Application
Open, edit, save and print files.
1.4 Internet Basics
Understand what the internet is and means of connecting to it. Use a web browser to access a web page. Use hyperlinks, URL’s and image links to navigate between web pages.
1.5 E-mail Basics
Understand what e-mail is and the make-up of an e-mail address. Understanding terms like junk mail, spam, virus. Create, open, and send e-mails.
Block 2 – Information Search.
This makes the candidate aware of the nature and extent of information available on the internet.
2.1 Searching
Understand and use a Search Engine. Save and print a web page. Add a web page to a Favourites/Bookmarks Folder.
2.2 Precautions
Understand the problem and risks of unsolicited e-mail and viruses. Understand the need for secure access and the security risk of providing confidential/personal information to the internet. Learn about consumer rights and parental control.
2.3 Information
Browse and retrieve news and other media. Browse for governmental, education and training information. Be aware of on-line services such as banking, shopping and travel.
Block 3 – e-Participation
Building on the computer and search skills already acquired, this Block completes the skills set necessary for the Candidate to become an e-Citizen.
3.1 Online Services
Understand what an online form is and how they work: use of menus, check boxes, data entry etc. Understand the security risk of providing credit/debit card details.
3.2 Participation
Be able to e-mail your views, participate in news polls, request and download information, participate in a discussion group. Be able to e-mail your bank about online banking. Purchase a theatre ticket, CD or Book. Pay a bill or book a flight, hire a car. Be able to fill out an online job application form or e-mail your CV. Be able to post a message to a message board or forum.
