Prayer Focus
"Continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling for it is God who works in you to will and act according to his good purpose" (
Philippians 2 verses 12 & 13)
Christians are in a uniquely privileged position. We have been restored to a right relationship with God because of what the Lord Jesus Christ has done for us by dying in our place (
1 Peter 1 verses18 and 19). God has done this for us - we are saved purely by God's grace.
It might seem strange then to read in the Bible that Christians are to work out their salvation! But if we read it carefully we see that God calls us to work out what he has already worked in us!
There are therefore some important implications for us:
- The Christian life in not meant to be laid back - we are all called to put effort into living for Christ.
- Christians are not to be flippant but rather live in a God honouring way (God fearing is an old fashioned term but it is Biblical!).
- We are here on this earth for a purpose. God wants you to do something with the life he has given you!
- God can use everyone who has submitted his or her live to Jesus Christ.
- We need to keep in constant touch with God through prayer and reading his Word, the bible, to keep on track with his purpose for our lives.
So here are some suggestions for prayer and praise for each day of the week:
Sunday - The Lord's Day:
- God has a purpose for our church! As we come together today we need to be seeking his will. We continue to rejoice in the way the Lord has so richly blessed us. Give thanks that the future with God is better than the past! Rejoice in God's provision - His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness (
2 Peter 1 verse 3).
- Rejoice in the salvation that is ours in Christ. His desire is to sanctify us completely - in body, soul and spirit. (
1 Thessalonians 5 verse 23)
Monday:
Pray for our world
- Continue to pray that leaders of the nations may seek their wisdom from God. Pray for areas of conflict and poverty, - especially where there is tension (e.g.
Iraq, Zimbabwe, Palestine and Israel). God has promised that "of the increase of his government and peace there will be no end" (Isaiah 9 verse 7). Pray that we might see in our day the defeat of systems of belief that run counter to Christ’s Lordship.
- Pray for those who seek to make the mind of Christ known to the world especially church leaders and evangelists. Pray that the gospel will increasingly be seen as the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes. Our world needs a Saviour just as much as it did two thousand years ago (if not more!). Pray that many may acknowledge the Lord Jesus as their Saviour this year.
Tuesday: Pray for our nation.
- Give thanks that in the past God gave us clear thinking individuals who took God's Word seriously. Pray that Christians today might seek to understand the mind and will of God and not follow the world's shallow thinking. Give thanks for our national leaders who acknowledge Jesus to be their Lord. Pray for God’s protection for the Queen, the Royal family and all members of the government. Pray that many more leaders will come to know the Saviour.
- Even in the past year of increasing instability in the world we can thank God that we are privileged to live in a country where there is freedom and peace. Pray that this may continue so that we can live peaceful and godly lives in all godliness and holiness
(1 Timothy 2 verse 2). Pray also that as a nation we might help in bringing God's salvation to the whole world.
Wednesday:
Pray for God's church worldwide.
- Continue to pray for Christians who suffer for their faith, especially in countries such as
North Korea, Vietnam, Indonesia and Pakistan. Pray that this year all of God’s church might enjoy a time of peace and growth (see Acts 9 verse 31). We can praise God that even in the midst of suffering Christ is building his church and we know that the gates of hell will not stop its advance.
- As we see a realignment in the Anglican communion pray that this might lead to the strengthening of God’s people and hasten the day when the church will display its true unity in Christ, and all falsehood will be exposed.
Thursday:
Pray for our own Mission Partners
Continue to give thanks and pray for
Andy and Uta Buckler and family as they seek to lead their church in France. Pray for their health and safety. Pray that the gospel will increasing be spread in France and that Christ kingdom will be built in that land.
- Continue to remember all the efforts to bring the good news to children and young people. Pray and give thanks for the projects we will be involved in this year. The
Falconer Home continues to be thankful to God for the support they received for the U.K. Also give thanks for the work of CPAS, Youth for Christ , Eternity and our own Youth Groups, and remember in prayer all their work amongst young people. Give thanks for the work of European Christian Mission (ECM) and Crosslinks and pray that they might have all the resources they need to fulfil God's purposes for them.
Friday:
Pray for God's work in our own area.
- Pray for our church leaders as they seek to know the way the church should develop. Pray that everyone might be sharing the responsibility of working together to build God's kingdom.
- Give thanks for all the activities for
children and young people. Pray that all involved might be seeking to train the youngsters in God's Word that will lead to them living purposeful lives in Christ's service.
- Pray for all local Christians and
churches. Pray that together we might be seeking to bring people to the Lord Jesus and making them into his disciples.
Saturday:
Pray for ourselves, our families, friends and neighbours.
- Give thanks to the Lord for all those who we know. Pray that those who know the Lord might be strong in faith and that those who do not know him might be drawn to him soon.
- Pray for everyone you know who is going through difficult times, those struggling with illness, bereavement or financial problems. Let us seek to encourage one another by our thoughtful prayers, words and actions.
