Lower Jurassic Fossils from North Yorkshire

Jet is a hard  form of fossilized wood (type of monkey puzzle tree), and is classed as a semi precious stone. Jet has been used for 1000’s of years for jewelry. When polished it takes on an intense reflective black.

Jet was made popular in more recent times during Queen Victoria’s rein, she took to wearing Jet jewelry following the death of Prince Albert. Whitby museum has a great collection of Victorian Whitby Jet pieces.
