Crèche

Another year, don’t they just fly by? Perhaps time does pass more quickly when you’re having fun! We certainly have fun at the crèche and our play session soon comes to an end. I thought you may find it interesting to know how we structure our mornings so that all children, whether they lie there, crawl, wobble or walk, can participate in a varied and enjoyable morning.

When the children arrive about 9.45am we have our ‘free play’ session: this means that children play with whatever toy or activity attracts them. This could be painting, dressing up, playing with Thomas the Tank Engine, drawing, play dough or one of the other vast number of toys we have to choose from. Babies head for the baby construction toys or the huge selection of toys designed to attract and stimulate little minds, or they might follow their brother or sister and try and copy them!

At approximately 11am we stop for toast, fruit and a drink. Some children aren’t used to sitting at the table to eat, so we often read a favourite story to encourage them to remain seated. ‘Lift the flap’ books, while popular, do get a little greasy due to buttered fingers!

While breakfast is being served, and children are listening to a story, some of the toys and activities are tidied away. There is then space for us to select an activity that allows the children to get some physical exercise. We have little cars, rockers, tricycles, hoops and some playground games to get arms and legs moving. Sometimes they want to sing ‘action rhymes’ like ‘Sleeping Animals’, ‘Dingle Dangle Scarecrow’, ‘Ring-a-ring-a roses’ and other old favourites.

Often around 12 noon we will be feeling peckish again, and so a biscuit may be needed to give us energy for the journey home! Sitting down gives us an opportunity to talk about ‘life, the universe and everything’ or just to be quiet, listen and join in with a singing tape or read another story.

When it’s time to go home limbs are tired, tummies are full and maybe there’s a painting to put proudly on the wall at home or on ‘Our Pictures’ board in the crèche. Sarah, Carol and I really value the time the children spend with us, we love to see them grow, smile, share and develop skills to take with them into the wider world, a privilege to be a part of their world for a brief time.

We thought you might like to see little handprints and a rhyme, to remind us of these special days!
