151 miles across the Sahara Desert for Cancer Research

Late March early April 2012

The race will be run in Morocco over six stages and will travel through the toughest terrain possible over uneven rocky, stony ground and sand dunes which consist of 15-20%  of the Distance.

Day time temperatures will rise to 120°F / 50°C.

The race builds in stages up to a 52 mile Marathon on stage 4 which runs through the night. The total distance will be 5½ Marathons.

Plus you have to carry all your own kit, inc food, water, clothes, medical supplies, sleep bag etc.

A single Cancer treatment can cost £1000 and may need to be carried out several times for many weeks.

After losing his own sister to Cancer in 1996 and having witnessed first hand the hard work that goes into treating and caring for Cancer patients Steven Shapland has decided to run the Marathon Des Sables to raise money for Yorkshire Cancer Research, a charity that supports our leading laboratories based in Yorkshire, which boast to be a centre of excellence in research and educational training for the fight against Cancer.
