The demonstration was held where the proposed new north runway would have been in a cutting 50 m deep, and was designed to show that, in the same way that the Twyford Down and Newbury protests caused a rethink of roads policy, so any attempt to destroy the English countryside would cause similar protests and result in a rethink of the policy of tax-free aviation.

The 2007 actual average mode map is shown below: The outer line shows the 57 leq contour - which is said by DfT to represent the area where there is "significant community annoyance". In practice, however, the fact that many members of GACC, both Parish Councils and individuals, are located outside the 57 leq contour shows that annoyance is much more widespread.

The government has produced a number of computer generated predictions of the increased noise disturbance that would inevitably result from any plans to expand Gatwick airport. These models describe noise levels in terms of Decibels (dBA) and it is the government's opinion that 57dBA is the noise level at which aircraft noise becomes a "significant community annoyance". The government consultation document February 2003 presented maps that showed the area that it predicted, with two new runways, would experience noise levels at or above 57dBA.
