HOW TO MEASURE YOUR OWN ROOM OR STAIRS FOR CARPETS

If you feel confident enough to measure your own rooms you can supply us with your own measurements and we will use them to work out any estimates for you.

This will give you a quick estimate of total costs.

We would still recommend a site visit prior to ordering any flooring.

It is essential that you read this section in detail before you advise us of your measurements.

All sizes must allow for the maximum dimensions (furthest points) of the room or area measured.

All doorway recesses (normally 10 - 15 cm in depth) must be taken into consideration in the overall measurements (see example A)

We recommend that you add a 10 cm cutting tolerance to all maximum measurements taken.

Measuring flat areas

In order to keep all flooring running in the same direction throughout, particularly carpet pile/pattern directions, please give all length and width measurements in the same format sequence.

For example, if you are measuring a room length that was facing the north/south side of the house, then all other lengths of the rooms you measure should also face north/south. In this example, all the widths should therefore be facing west/east. (see example B)

Hallway measurements should be taken with your back to the main entrance front door and with your left to right measurement as your width dimension.

Measuring guide for landings and stairs for Carpets

Landing measurements should be taken with your back facing the staircase, with your left to right measurement as your width.

The width of the top landing stair nose governs the pile direction of the carpet, and therefore must be taken as the width measurement for the stairs. When taking the landing length measurement, this must be measured over the top stair and down to meet the first staircase tread. See example C.

Measuring stairs follow a similar format to landings and are illustrated in the various stair type examples as below.
