Sight for the Sightless

Double Bracket: Located in Pune, the K K Eye Institute is managed and run by the Sadhu Vaswani Mission, a non profit charitable mission. The K K Eye Institute is a major thrust towards Community Ophthalmology, as it is an independent organization with a mission to combat eye disease and reduce avoidable blindness through a comprehensive approach to eye care.

In adherence to the Mission philosophy of “Service to the Poorest of the Poor,” we launched the Free Eye Surgeries Programme – “THE SIGHT FOR THE SIGHTLESS PROGRAMME” - which delivers our services to the poor people. The geographical distribution in and around Pune was intensively surveyed and rural areas with lack of similar health services were identified. Medical social workers were appointed and stationed at these villages, who continuously survey /identify /screen / counsel and patients with an eye problem and announce a date for the camp.

On the date of the camp - our technical team from the hospital (including an ophthalmologist) visits the camp and examines the patients. Following which ambulances are sent out for a pick up and patients are brought to the hospital and then admitted for the surgery.

The Operation Theatres and the Community Ophthalmology Wing (Sight for the Sightless Programme) started in October 2003. Since it's functioning, the Institute has performed over 17,332 FREE surgeries (as of 28 Feb, 07) for villagers from various rural areas of Maharashtra under the Sight for the Sightless Programme.

Based on the Mission Philosophy, the same doctors, equipment and facilities are used to treat the poor and the rich alike. The sophisticated angiography machine, the ultra sonography machine, the high end operating microscopes, the high end slit lamps etc. are being used with no discrimination for all who need the service. We believe you will be happy to know that no villager is turned away for want of any other ophthalmic treatment - besides cataract. There have been cases of Glaucoma, DCT and Retina that have been treated additionally.

The volumes are growing and the plan for the coming financial year is to operate at least 8000 villagers, where every little bit helps and your contribution will bring along the gift of sight.

A donation to sponsor one eye surgery is 50 USD or 2100INR. Please feel free to revert for any more information that you may require about the Mission / Eye Institute
