Our Founder and First Chairman George Jones

George Jones Engineering Services LTD, founded in 1803, are one of the longest
established companies in the United Kingdom and the variety of services we offer is almost
as diverse as the history we can look back on.

Based in Smethwick we supply industries which deal in non-ferrous materials such as
brasses and bronzes, and we are actively involved with the gold bullion trade, which
encompasses gold, silver and platinum
.

Whilst still producing rolling mills, some of which are highly sophisticated or
innovative, a range of other services are now on offer.

The Smethwick Industrial Services Group, of which, we are a part, offer a complete
and self contained service to industry, from building a new factory, to the design and
installation of machinery. We have our own design and drafting office as well as a
specialist electrical division.

A contract which was completed for the Royal Mint was for an extremely accurate
rolling mill which took twelve months to develop and manufacture
.

The mill, having a capacity of 100 tonnes, rolls gold into strips from which Britannia
gold coins are minted. Obviously a very strict control on the exact thickness of the
precious metal is essential, as any wastage would prove costly. With this in mind we
tested the mill to within a six micron accuracy.

As experts in industrial removals, we frequently receive requests from other
companies for help in moving plant from one country to another. A great deal of work
is carried out for companies overseas. An extensive project for a company in China
has been undertaken and completed, this involved the development of a process line
for scalping material top and bottom. It was designed, built, wired and tested at our
factory in Smethwick and accepted by the customer before it was taken out to China
to be installed.

Another major project undertaken in recent times was a £1.5m contract for the Greek
Government for plant on the Albanian border which again was designed, built,
installed and commissioned by us.

As an example of our extensive engineering scope outside the rolling mill trade, we
have also completed a project for Air Lingus which involved plant capable of
reconditioning the undercarriage of its aircraft more proof of our versatility.

At the present time, we as a group employ upwards of 200 people

Whilst we at George Jones Engineering Services LTD are justifiably proud of our
long-standing reputation for quality, our long history also provides some fascinating
glimpses into the past, our order book goes back far enough to show two orders for
rolling mills from the famous James Watt, at the very competitive price of 30 shillings(less than $1)
each!
