Xenon and halogen lightsources for all disciplines

The light box range is made up of the halogen and powerful Xenon range. The halogen range producing a good quality of light (3600°K) and power with 250 Watt light sources available which are suitable for the needs of the general practitioner and most surgery requirements.

The Xenon range is for the high end requirement where pure light quality is important. The Xenon discharge lamps burn at 5600°K and are ideally suited to camera work producing a larger quantity of pure white light, which is vital in distinguishing colour variations in operations.

A number of the light sources are available in manual and automatic versions. This is to provide the user with compatibility to older camera systems. Older cameras have a comparatively slow shutter speed of between 1/50 to 1/100,000 second so their ability to provide a good picture in all light conditions is reduced. By combining with an automatically adjusting light source the amount of light produced is optimised at all times helping to produce a good quality picture with minimal manual alterations.

As a comparison of power between Halogen and Xenon here is a rough guide to their respective Lux outputs:

PowerHalogenXenon
150 Watt 25,000 lux -
250 Watt 33,000 lux -
100 Watt - 70,000 lux
180 Watt - 100,000 lux
300 Watt - 200,000 lux

As can be seen the light output of the Xenon light sources is far greater than that of the Halogen range. The power of the Xenon 300 watt must not be under estimated and it is recommended that it be used with a 4.8mmØ fibrelight bundle, with a glass rod separating the fibres from direct contact with the lightsource. This rod helps prevent burning and the pitting that can often be seen on damaged fibreoptic cables and increases their useful life. This power would not normally be needed for camera work but is suitable for large cavity work such as laparoscopy work with headlights or in situations where the quantity of blood reduces visibility.
