The Book

In 2003, Messrs Gaffney and Gater published Revealing The Buried Past: Geophysics for Archaeologists (Tempus Publishing Ltd). With the onset of middle age, hair loss and failing memory they decided the time had finally come to "have our say on archaeological geophysics." The book is intended as an introductory reference to the background and modern practice of arhcaeological geophysics; for archaeologists who use or wish to use geophysics as part of their wider evaluations, prospective students of archaeology or archaeological geophysics and anyone who has watched Time Team and wondered what exactly this "geophys" thing was all about.

GSB Reports, Conferences and Papers

All surveys undertaken by GSB are fully reported upon and these documents are suitable for use in planning applications or environmental assessments. While the majority of these reports normally eventually reside in local SMRs, some are published within County or National journals.

In an attempt to introduce modern archaeological geophysics to a wider audience, the staff of GSB regularly attend and speak at conferences. For example, papers have recently been presented at the European Geophysical Society meeting in Wiesbaden, at Archaeometry in Los Angeles, the IFA annual meeting in Bradford, at the Geological Society meeting in London and at the Society of American Archaeologists meeting in New Orleans. Topics discussed by GSB at these meetings include: the use of individual techniques, sampling strategies and research design and the use of geophysics in archaeological evaluation.

Chris is Editor and John Associate Editor of the new international journal on Archaeological Prospection.

Technical Papers

GSB Prospection has contributed to several publications for the IFA, which provide useful information on geophysical survey. These include:-
  • Chris Gaffney, John Gater and Susan Ovenden: IFA Technical Paper Number 9, 1991, Geophysical Prospecting in Archaeological Evaluations.
  • Chris Gaffney and John Gater: "Practice and Method in the Application of Geophysical Techniques in Archaeology" in Archaeological Resource Management in the UK: An Introduction, Institute of Field Archaeologists, 1993.
