Radar Survey in an archaeological context

mine_rad1

A radar survey was carried out over an Iron Age mound at Mine Howe, on mainland Orkney. Data were collected using a Pulse Ekko 1000 system with a 225MHz antenna. The radargram below shows sections across the enclosing ditch, together with some refelctions of possible archaeological interest within the mound.

Two time slices of the radar data are shown below. The plot on the left shows the data from a short time interval corresponding to an approximate depth of 1.2 to 1.6 metres. The enclosing ditch is clearly visible. The image on the right is a composite time slice which has been generated using results from different time intervals. It shows reflections of possible interest within the mound.
