Eye Examination
Our Optometrists carry out a huge array of checks during to your examination These can include testing your eye pressure to detect glaucoma - which, if undetected could lead to blindness), checking the field of vision and the health of the back of your eye. For some people the NHS may meet the cost although extra tests may be recommended such as digital photography for which a fee may be charged.
Digital Photography
We have invested in a specialised camera which takes photographs of the back of the eye. Images of any abnormalities can be emailed to the specialist at the hospital to aid referral. Even for healthy eyes the images are useful to monitor any change over time.
Contact Lenses
We fit a wide range of contact lenses using all the major brands such as Acuvue and CIBA Air Optix. Daily single use lenses, monthly lenses and extended wear (lenses you can sleep in) are available. A contact lens assessment and trial will allow us to suggest the best lens for your needs. Our experienced practitioners will also advise on lenses for astigmatism and bifocal and multifocal contact lenses. We are also one of the few practices specialising in rigid contact lens fitting which are still the best type of lens for some prescriptions and certain eye conditions such as keratoconnus.
Corneal Topography
Due to the specialist nature of some of our contact lens work we have equipment rarely seen in standard optometrist practices. A corneal topographer gives a complete map of the shape of the cornea enabling the fitting of unusual shaped corneas.
It is also used for orthokeratology where the cornea is shaped by rigid lenses worn overnight leaving the patient free from contact lens wear during the day.
Orthokeratology
This is a procedure for correcting shortsightedness by wearing contact lenses overnight. The special lenses shape the cornea during sleep leaving the patient free from glasses or contact lenses during the day. It is therefore especially suitable for patients who enjoy water and contact sports. Orthokeratology is reversible and if the lenses are not worn the vision returns to its pre-treatment level.
Laser Surgery
For those looking for a more permanent solution to vision problems Hazel Smith Opticians act as a local management centre for Advance VisionCare based in Harley Street. An initial assessment can be done at the practice and a report sent to Mr Pillai the refractive surgeon. The surgery takes place in the Harley Street clinic but aftercare is provided at the practice for twelve months
following surgery.
