Local Equine Charity - www.flicka.org.uk
I recieved an email from Judy Giles, who co - runs the Flicka foundation with colleague laurie stevenson.
They were concerned about the behaviour of one of thier residents called Buzby, a 23 year old gelding who in the past had been abused. He had recently started displaying aggressive and territorial traits especially in and around the stable.
I met Laurie at the yard, we chatted about Buzby's past/present behaviour and how this could be linked to current issues. this horses inwanted behaviuor was exacerbated by the visitors play an important role in the upkeep of the charity, they like to meet the horses and ponies that have been rescued and give them treats (usually from their hands).
Hand feeding is not usually a good idea. It changes the relationship between the human and equine, it can also encourage nipping and bitting in the long term.
We as humans love to give our equine friends treats, by all means please continue, but put them on the ground or in a bucket.
Buzby was a horse that associates food with nipping, when i met him i knew he was a gentle soul but circumstances have led to this defensive behaviour.
i worked with him in the sabdschool, he was unaware of personal space, couldnt back up and had braces everywhere. slowly Buzby started reading the signal i was giving him, so we ended on a good note.
Subsequent visits have involved further ground work and exercises in and around his stable.
Reiki is also given as part of his therapy, it was nice to see him so relaxed, i think the other members of the stable block enjoyed it aswell.
I try and attend weekly (schedule allowing) on a voluntary basis, to donate time and skill. The flicka Foundation, like a large number of charities survive on sponsorship and the help of various willing voluntary hands. If you can help please do. It does'nt matter how large or small your part everything is thoroughly appreciated. They are a lovely, freidnly bunch of people.
* A halter and 12ft rope has been kindly donated by Jo Culley, to help with Buzby's rehabilitation
* A demo is planned for spring 2008, all proceeds go to Flicka
Watch this space!!!!!
