Red Squirrels
The Island is also one of the last UK bastions of the red squirrel, the sole species before the importation of the North American grey squirrel, which has now displaced it throughout almost all of the UK. Grey squirrels are officially banned from the Island, lest they threaten the survival of the smaller red squirrel.
