The Solent Coast
The northern coastline is less spectacular than the south. Ryde has a long pier to bridge over its sands to the ferries for Portsmouth. A series of winding estuaries provides rich feeding for birds and others. Queen Victoria's Osborne House and St Mildred's Church are popular with visitors. The old capital of the Island, Newtown, is now a tranquil shadow of its former self, its once bustling harbour silted up to all but small craft.
