A
splendid photograph of John in his role as Private Frazer
from Dad's Army appears on the reverse of the book.
This photo apparently was given to him by Ian Lavender
and taken by Michael Fresco.

"Actors
as men-of-letters are rare birds; not counting that army
of ghosts who haunt stage memoirs I can remember a mere
handful. So when out of the blue I was invited to compile
this anthology, I accepted with carefree alacrity.
It helped though that I'd given houseroom to far too many
books, and that among them were most of those which, after
much cogitation, are listed below as my personal choice
of good Scot's writing...." John
Laurie (from the introduction to John Laurie's Foreword
)
This
book was a collection of Scottish Stories and poems edited
by John Laurie, which inspired and gave the actor great
pleasure throughout his long life. The book was prefaced
with a six page foreword from John explaining his choices
and his omissions. It highlighted the fact that he took
great pleasure in editing the book and merely wasn't just
lending his name to it.
