but
Punch and Judy and green dresses on stage are taboo to Sgt.Wilson
of Dad’s Army

"…I’m
not particularly superstitious, though I don’t like women
wearing green on stage. That’s supposed to be a very bad thing
to do."And I don’t like scripts that mention graveyards
and coffins."We had a coffin scene in Dad’s Army recently,
and none of us liked doing that very much. But we did it.
It’s slightly macabre though isn’t it? I think we would all
have been happier not doing that particularly scene."
Le
Mesurier has been married twice. His first wife was comedy actress
Hattie Jacques who lives in Earls Court with their two children
Robin, 17 and Kim, 13. "I see them frequently,"
he said. "They come over here, or I go over there and
take them out to a movie. "I took Kim to see Hair, and
neither of us liked it. I thought the performances were appalling.
It was all so pretentious. Kim’s quite hippy and very with-it
but he didn’t like it, either."
He
was introduced to his present wife, Joan, by a friend at the
establishment club, "which was rather good at the time…in
the days when Peter Cook was associated with it." Le
Mesurier works tirelessly, appearing in films and recording
"voice-overs" for TV commercials. He’s advertised
everything from beer to marmalade, flour to fish fingers. "I
never turn anything down." He said.
