attacks age discrimination

Veteran
comedy writer Jimmy Perry believes the TV industry discriminates
against older people.
The man who
helped create Dad's Army says the industry is run by ageist
executives who are only interested in capturing young viewers.
Jimmy, 79,
tells TV Plus: "Thirteen million people are over 60, so
why do TV executives totally ignore this part of the population?
There are no mature presenters on TV. This country is so ageist.
"They
don't understand that young people don't really watch TV that
much. They do watch it but they have other distractions. I see
myself as a 'grey panther'. We have a lot to offer but no one
gives us a chance. Older people want to see more representation
on TV.
"Decisions
are made by 40-year-olds who don't understand what the older
people or young people want. I did a Jimmy Perry's Turns series
on BBC for many years, but they dropped it. They wanted a younger
presenter to do it, not me."
