Dear
John

Almost
two decades after his death and the release of his posthumous
autobiography "A Jobbing Actor" comes a book from John's
wife, Joan.
"Dear
John" is a timely release, not only does Joan tell her own
and John's life story but also adds a personal slant by revealing
personal letters written to and by John in the later years of
his life (particularly through both his and Joan's relationship
and eventual marriage).
Of course,
there are familiar stories which you may already be aware of but
perhaps not too clear on, some of which were covered in John's
"A Jobbing Actor" and Joan's "Lady Don't Fall Backwards".
John's unhappy marriage to Hattie Jacques and Joan's affair with
Tony Hancock, but this book doesn't dwell on what has already
been stated, but reveals more about how John and Joan dealt with
these situations. Joan remains committed to her love of John throughout,
by no means painting him an angel but definitely a true gentleman.
For Dad's
Army fans there are a few anecdotes about behind the scenes of
the series as well as a warm tribute from Clive Dunn at the close
of the book.
I would certainly
recommend this book to anyone who enjoys the work of John Le Mesurier,
you will come away from it feeling you've come to know him even
better and realising how sorely missed he still is!
