Littlejohn
enlists Dad's Army for Iraq
Dateline:
March 2003
In the
February 28th edition of The Sun, columnist Richard Littlejohn
commented on a recent Government administrative error which consisted
of 80-year-old war veteran Joe Steer getting his call-up papers
for the war in Iraq.
'It's
61 years since he last saw action at the battle of El Alamein...
he's still prepared to fight for Queen and country. But they
might have to fit caterpillar tracks to his electric wheelchair.'
Richard
continued..."If I were an OAP living in Walmington-on-Sea
I'd certainly be worried about opening any buff envelopes from
the MoD."
The small article
featured an excellent cartoon drawn by Dave Gaskill showing Jonesy
leading OAP's into Iraq while two US troops look on.
A week earlier
on 28 February, the Daily Mail published a science article
by Tim Utton entitled Wimps really do feel more pain, so don't
be ashamed. Frowning from the article was none other than Private
Pike played by Ian Lavender.
The article compared the differences in how some people are more
like Pike than Charles Bronson and that pain threshold is linked
to our genes!
