Friday 17th April 2009.

Presentation night tonight, and both ladies and gents singles. The ladies champion is Debbie Kenny who beat Brenda Woodcraft in a final played in the spirit of sport. The men's champion, for the first time is Mitch Brenner, who beat Dave Betts in a compelling game which could have gone either way.

That's  it now for another season, i hope everyone enjoys their outdoor bowls, so until late September,  it's goodbye from him.

Thursday 16th April 2009.

Ladies triples and Mens pairs finals tonight and two good games they were. The ladies triples was betweenA Welham, M Dainton and T McGeown and D Kenny, A Hutcherson and B Barr. A fairly even game up to the fourteenth end. B Barr's team took an early 5 shot lead in the first couple of ends but T McGeown's team fought back and on the tenth end it was even steven at 10-10. From then on it was all Barr, and McGeown only managed to win one more end, and finished up losing 19-10.

The mens pairs was a game of three parts. On the 5th end Dave Betts and Russell Hughes were leading 7-1 against Brian Kelly and Rowly Beckett. They then proceeded to drop 8 shots in the next three ends to trail 9-8. Back they came, and by the 15th end,  had regained the lead 15-10. On the 18th end the score stood at 16 all and a grandstand finish was assured. The crowd were enthralled as Brian and Rowland scored two singles to go into the last end leading by 2 shots, 18-16. The crowd were on their feet now, watching every wood as the tension mounted. The head changed with every bowl delivered, and with one wood left each, Betts and Hughes were holding one shot, knowing that if they drew another, Kelly had the last wood. Dave Betts went to the mat, and the crowd drew a deep breath as he delivered his last bowl. Sadly it never quite reached, so two new names will be on the Pairs Trophy this year, and Brian Kelly and Rowland Beckett go forward into next years Champion of Champions.

Wednesday 15th April 2009.

Tonight saw the final of the triples between Lou Jacobs, Colin Foster, Terry Lichkin and Mick Bevis, Chris Granger and Dave Waters. Terry Lichkin's trio got off to a flying start with a six on the first end and continued in that vein up until the tenth end, with a lead of 14-5. A dropped five followed by a single put their opponents back in the game with the score now 14-11.Undettered they scored five shots in the next couple of ends and Bevis, Granger and Waters shook hands on the 17 end with the score at 20-13. A fully deserved victory.

Tuesday 14th April 2009.

Two finals took place tonight, the ladies pairs and the mens fours. The ladies pairs went to

Debby Kenny and Barbara Barr who beat Felicia Lawrence and Joan Walker by 28-8.

Thursday 1st April 2009 - League Rule News.

In order to bring the internal leagues into line with the proposed 2012 Olympic Demonstration Sport rules the following alterations are being proposed

  • The opposition will be awarded 2 shots for killed ends
  • Players will be encouraged to wear coloured shirts to distinguish between the teams
  • The two hour session will be split into two sets of up to seven ends, with a point awarded to the team winning a set, plus an extra point if a team wins both sets
  • Substitutions will be allowed between the sets, allowing the Skip/Team Manager to swap out any player having a poor game
  • A handicap system will be introduced such that teams winning three weeks in a row will start on -5 shots the following week. This will be cummulative so that a six week run will result in a -10 shot start, etc.
  • The 3rd and 6th ends in each set be "Power Play" ends, during which the team that lost the previous end will be allowed to re-bowl once any wood they deem poor
  • Each team will have a Joker to play before the start of one end in each set. The result of the end is doubled if they win the end, or halved if their opponents win the end
  • In line with the changes in the Ladies dress code which the wearing of grey trousers, men will be allowed to wear grey pleated skirts provided their length brings them below the knee
Of course these changes will need to be ratified at the A.G.M this month. Please attend in order to have your say.
