Formby Hockey Club's first team celebrated the award of a 175,000 grant for the replacement of their artificial pitch at Cricket Path on Saturday with a a rousing 6-3 victory over league leaders Leek.

Leek took an early lead with a breakaway goal but Formby replied when David Seddon converted his side's first penalty corner.

Formby took the lead after the break when Phil Capper scored with a snap shot from the top of the circle to start a run of 4 goals without reply. Seddon scored three more corners in succession to take the game away from Leek.

The visitors pulled one back but Richard Thompson made it six with a rare reverse stick effort. Leek scored a penalty corner in the dying minutes but it was too little too late.

On Sunday Formby had a close battle with second placed Brooklands eventually going down 2-1.

The visitors took the lead but Formby equalised when Andrew Kent was brought down by Brooklands' keeper and Seddon converted the resultant penalty stroke.

The second half possession was dominated by Brooklands as Formby tired following Saturday's exploits.Yyoungster Stevie Wright nearly grabbed a winner however, when he cleverly lobbed the keeper only to see his shot bounce of the keeper's helmet.

Brooklands were awarded a penalty corner with ten minutes remaining and they scored from the rebound leaving little time for Formby to come back.

Formby 2nd XI were unlucky to finish losers on Saturday in a closely contested game at home to Wrexham, from North Wales.

The visitors started the stronger and looked like they might open their account early on but the defensive pair of Antony Metcalf and John Platt sood firm and kept the Welsh team at bay.

Formby started to get into their stride and started making attacking probes into the Wrexham circle. However, it was the visitors who took the lead with a well worked penalty corner. The Cricket Path team fought back quickly and within minutes were on level tersm with a goal from John Davies.

The scores were level at half time and another goal from either side looked like it would take the points. Unfortunatley for Formby it Wrexham who scored from a penalty stroke. Though the home side did have a few chances to equalise they tired in the last part of the game and could not capitalise on their possession.

This Saturday they travel to Crewe, from Cheshire in what will be a tough match against the top of the table side.
