A chance remark by a mum watching her daughter play hockey led to a boom in membership at Formby Hockey Club. The mum mentioned that she enjoyed playing at school and wished she could play again. Coach Vicki Haselhurst responded by offering training for any mums who were interested. Within a few months around 30 women were regularly turning up for training on Thursday evenings, 7 to 8pm. Many had never played hockey before. Last year some of the women formed the club’s fourth ladies team and took the plunge into competitive hockey with Lancashire Ladies League Division Two. The Formby Ladies 4th team gamefully recorded defeats of up to 18-0 in their first season. But they have gained a reputation for cheerful resilience – and for having the most vocal supporters on the side line. This season their persistence is paying off, with narrow defeats so far of just 3-0 and 2-1 showing that the Formby Ladies 4th will soon be notching up their first victories. Vicki Haselhurst said: “I am extremely proud of our team, we play to win but we also play for enjoyment and we are all having a great time, both on and off the pitch!”
