June 2007 - England Call for Gillingham A.A member Will Bohne

One of Gillingham A.A and the Area's most consistent young match anglers has been invited to represent England. Gillingham A.A and Garbolino Blackmore Vale Match Group member Will Bohne has been selected to fish for Drennan Team England at the World Youth Championships on the River Labe in the Czech Republic. Will has been fishing Gillingham Matches since he was 13 and won
his first junior match when he was 14. Since then he has watched and learned, spending his initial couple of years bank running for the team
before breaking into the squad in the 2004/05 season. His biggest match win came in 2005 when he won a 120 peg practice open on the Grand Union Canal at Leyton Buzzard with 32Ld 14oz of skimmers and Perch. He has since fished three Angling Times Winter league finals with the team. Team Captain Simon Hebditch said; "I am very proud of him." "He's a very versatile angler and is exceptionally good on Bloodworm and Jokerfishing, and this has held him in good stead in a quest for an England place".
Will secured his England place after trails at Lower Mead fisheries in Redditch. He caught the eye of England manager Mark Downes who described him as the hardest working angler on the bank. He then fished the final trial at Furzton Lake in Milton Keynes where he beat current England Internationals to Earn his place in the squad.

In his younger days, playing football for both Mere and Gillingham, and he also played Cricket, Skittles and Darts, only taking up Fishing later on.

30th January  - Tragic news reaches us today that Dave Hillier was involved in a road incident yesterday evening

Dave Hillier, the club's match secretary was tragically killed yesterday afternoon after a collision with a car nr Marnhull.  He will be sorely missed by the club and its members.  Dave has been Match Secretary for many years and the job he has done has been first class.  Our thoughts and sympathies are with Dave's family.

"A great and kind man who will be so sadly missed thinking of you Dave" from Adie West, committee member and friend

25th January  - Sad news reaches us today that Tony Portnell has passed away

One of the clubs longest members and brightest characters Tony Portnell has passed away yesterday after a long battle with an illness. Tony was often seen out on the banks at matches, and one of the first to help with any work parties and support events.  A model club member, our thoughts are with his family, and he will be missed by the club.  His family are hoping to scatter his ashes around one of his favourite venues, where he can continue to watch the world go by from the bank.
