The Moat, given its name as a result of the site forming part of the original Castle moat, could not have been in a more sensitive location, surrounded as it is by Grade 11 and 11* Listed Buildings and a Scheduled Ancient Monument. It is screened from Castle Green by a 2 metre high brick wall and is set approximately two metres below the level of the rear gardens of 28-30 Castle Street.

Nine classrooms, in three groups of three, divided by cross circulation corridors linking to two staircases to the upper rear garden level, are joined by a glazed street running east- west which also contains toilets, staff room and resources area. To create the illusion of a ha-ha from the upper levels, the roof has been grassed and when viewed from the properties to the rear, it merges with the Castle Green.
