In the early 1920's, John Henry Mann, a cutler by trade married Clara Mann and opened their first business J.H. Mann at 210 Holme Lane as a fish and chip shop, opening 208 Holme Lane as a wet fish shop later on. Harley their son was born at the back of
these shops. J.H. Mann became a Limited Company on the 21st August 1942 and was then run by Harley Mann who opened the Hillsborough Branch in 1952 at 187 Bradfield Road, later joined by his son Peter John Mann in 1962. The shops on Holme Lane were closed in the 1980's and Peter joined his dad at Bradfield Road. In 1962 when Peter started in the family business there were three fish shops in Hillsborough shopping centre (a radius of half a mile), Hastings, Clayton and 'Manns'

In 1990 Glyn Stebbing who owned Claytons on Hillsborough Road put it up for sale. Peter's father had the opportunity to sell his Bradfield Road shop to William Hill (Bookmakers) and secured Glyn's shop for Peter having it completely re-fitted. Apart from Morrison's opening at Easter 1990, and losing the Crown Post Office on Hillsborough Road which moved to the Co-op, J.H. Mann Ltd has survived to be well known as: 'MANN'S OF HILLSBOROUGH'
