The Jura Hotel

The Isle of Jura possesses an hotel of quality and comfort in the 18 bedroom Jura Hotel.

Situated in the main village of Craighouse and with an ideal setting on the sheltered East Coast beside Small Isles Bay, the Hotel is one of the focal points of the Island's social life. It has magnificent views across the bay with its cluster of small uninhabited islands, a garden shelving gently to the sea's edge, a relaxed and comfortable atmosphere, and good, varied cooking based on local produce. All bedrooms have central heating, hot and cold water, and tea/coffee facilities, and the majority possess fine sea views. Most rooms have private facilities with bath or shower; a twin-bedded suite with private bathroom and sitting room is also available. There are family rooms with facilities to sleep 3 and 4.

The Hotel, which operates all the year round, is fully licensed. There is a comfortable Residents' Lounge overlooking the sea, and a Television Room. The Dining Room offers not only good food but superb panoramic views across Small Isles Bay. The Lounge Bar also has superb views and an extensive menu serving informal bar meals (venison pie a speciality).

Activities Available

 Bathing

The fierce currents of the North are by no means typical and from most of the beaches of the Island bathing is perfectly safe. Beautiful, unspoilt silver and white sand beaches such as those at Corran are a delight, particularly so for those who seek a peaceful, restful holiday. Though the sea may be cool, there are no crowds here, no funfairs or synthetic entertainments: it is likely that your solitary companion on the beach will be a Cormorant or a Herring Gull.

 Fishing

Many a pleasant hour may be spent fishing from the rocks or off the coast. Mackerel, Saithe and Lythe are just a few of the sea species while on the Ardfin Estate one may fly-fish in mountain burns and lochs for Trout. Again, guests of the Jura Hotel may use the Hotel's equipment. Trout and shore fishing are free of charges to Guests, but sea fishing other than from the shore or one of the Hotel's dinghies would involve a boat hire charge.

 Exploring

There are many interesting places to explore, like the antiquities; the uninhabited Atlantic Coast; the whirlpool of Corryvreckan (the Hotel can sometimes arrange special trips). For the less adventurous, tours of the famous Island Distillery, renowned for its 10 years old malt whisky, can sometimes be arranged. Here the process of distilling is explained and guests have the opportunity to sample and talk about whisky with experts.

 Deer Stalking and Salmon Fishing

There is a great demand for these seasonal activities and it is usually necessary to make arrangements for them with the Hotel well in advance of your visit.

 Painting and Photography

Landscapes and seascapes, spectacular sunsets - there are countless subjects for the Artist whether his chosen medium is oil or watercolour. The serious pictorial photographer will also find his days on Jura totally absorbing, but everyone who comes to Jura would do well to bring brushes or a camera to capture a personal view of this splendid place.

It would be hard to pretend that it never rains in the Hebrides and so it's good advice to bring waterproofs and wellingtons as well as your favourite author. Due to the characteristically rapid changes in the weather however, even the wettest, mistiest morning can be transformed into a beautiful afternoon and evening.

 Camping

There is limited camping available in the Hotel field with showers, toilets and laundry facilities available.
