The Branch's 'area of interest' stretches from Dundas Aqueduct
in the east, through the World Heritage City of Bath where the canal
joins the River Avon, and on to the western end of the Canal at
Hanham Lock on the outskirts of Bristol. The Claverton Pumping
Station, a unique waterwheel-driven pump that feeds water
from the River Avon up to the Canal, falls within the Bath and Bristol
Branch's area.
The Branch also has responsibility for one of the Trust's trip
boats. The narrowboat 'Jubilee'
operates from Brassknocker Basin, which is at the eastern end of
the short section of the Somerset Coal Canal that adjoins the Kennet
and Avon Canal at Dundas. The well-appointed 30-seat 'Jubilee' is
available for public and charter trips, either east towards Bradford
on Avon or west towards Bath. The crews of 'Jubilee' are all Trust
volunteers and they thoroughly enjoy meeting the visitors to the
Canal and providing boat trips through the beautiful countryside
in that area. The Branch is always on the lookout for new volunteers
so, if you would like to join the team as either helmsman, boat
crewman or cabin crew member, do get in touch with the
Boat
Master.
Claverton
Pumping Station is the only water-driven pumping station
in the world that is still feeding water to its canal. The wheel
and the pumps are maintained and operated by a happy band of enthusiastic
volunteers, some – but not all - of whom have engineering backgrounds.
They will always welcome new members who have an interest in operating
and preserving this unique piece of waterways heritage.
The Bath and Bristol Branch also runs a full programme of social
and fund-raising events for its members. They organize talks and
indoor meetings in the Winter months and, in the Summer months,
will organize walks and outdoor work-parties on the Canal. In keeping
with the Trust's objectives to protect and enhance the Canal, the
Bath and Bristol Branch have taken on the task of restoring the
crane and the Ticket Office at Dundas Wharf. The Branch will always
welcome new members who wish to take an active role in their activities,
be it at events, at Claverton, or on the trip-boat 'Jubilee'. Do
get in touch with a member of
the Committee.
