If you have already decided to join us and help us in our work, our On-Line registration is at the foot of this page...
By joining the Trust today, you will be helping us in our three vital aims:
To Preserve, Enhance and Protect 'Britain's Favourite Waterway'.
We own and operate several heritage sites of national and international importance as well as running a dedicated award winning Museum. We have many roles to play in securing the long term future of this Canal. Part of our work is to promote the use of the Canal, part of our work is to protect it from the wrong sorts of development as well as promoting the right sorts of development.
Much of our work involves displaying the Canal in use to the Public, all of this takes a large resource in terms of money and of volunteers time and effort not to mention that of our paid staff too!
Subscriptions and Donations form a very important part of our annual income and without them we could not do as much as we do.
While British Waterways have a basic responsibility to look after the Waterway for the nation, their obligation is limited by the fact that much of the course of the Canal between Bristol and Reading only operates as a remainder Waterway.
That means that much of this canal is only kept open by funding and effort from other sources. The Trust plays a vital role in providing funds and other resources to bridge the gap as well as funding and resourcing its own heritage responsibilities. Today, the Trust operates in partnership with British Waterways and the Local Authorities in what has become a model of operation now being adopted elsewhere along the Country's growing network of restored Canals.
This Canal supports thousands of Holidays every year, over a million visitors come to this canal and it is also directly responsible for maintaining hundreds of jobs in the local economies along its length.
The Trust, as a Charity, works as a social Enterprise and is heavily involved in making sure that the available funding flows into the canal corridor and is used ro maximum effect. In other words, The Trust has no shareholders - only members, and uses its surplus revenues to re-invest in the Canal and its Heritage, and influences BW and the Local Authorities to do the same for the good of the communities living in the Canal Corridor..
However hard we try, there are always things which need doing and as you would expect of a waterway and the Heritage sites we look after which are all about 200 years old, we continually need to raise money in order to survive and ensure this great waterway survives for future generations to enjoy..
Your contribution will be very much appreciated.
What do you get for being a member:
Like all charities we offer the opportunity to belong to a cause, but more than that we offer the opportunity not only for you to be a subscribing member but also to join in the many activities we get involved with along the length of the Canal every year.
For example: we have working parties along the canal which require volunteers to help out. We have shops for which volunteer staff are needed to serve our visitors, We have pumping stations to run and a Museum to look after and show to the public, we are a public information point and need people to give talks and answer queries on a wide range of subjects. We need people to help us do our Canal surveys every year to ensure that we can keep British Waterways up to date on what needs doing along the Canal for which they are responsible.
The second thing we offer is the tangible benefits:
Like all Charities, because of our status there is a limit in law to what we can offer but we take very great care to ensure that our members are appreciated for the contributions they make however large, however small.
Members are entitled to free entry at Crofton and Claverton Pumping
Stations and the Canal Museum at Devizes Wharf. Also you will regularly receive
FREE copies of our award winning magazine The Butty, the official magazine of The Kennet
and Avon Canal Trust which is packed with features about the Canal and events along it as well as regular articles about its heritage.
