The most easterly Branch of the Kennet and Avon Canal Trust 'oversees'
the stretch from the Canal's junction with the River Thames in the
east to Aldermaston in the west, arguably one of the most varied
and interesting parts of the waterway with a pleasant mix of rural
calm, suburban greenery and commercial bustle. The River Kennet
flows through the middle of Reading and the navigation forms a key
feature of the large Oracle retail and restaurant complex. To the
west of Reading, the need for a floodplain has kept housing developments
at a distance, and sections of navigable river alternate with artificial
canal as the waterway passes through a mainly rural landscape.
The Reading Branch of the Kennet and Avon Canal Trust dates from
the start of the campaign in 1955 to save the Canal from formal
abandonment. The Branch operates the successful
Canal Shop and Information Centre
at Aldermaston and they have an active itinerant sales stand that
can, on request, attend events anywhere in the Home Counties. The
Canal Shop is located just east of the lift-bridge that carries
the A340 across the Canal beside Aldermaston Lock, and sells refreshments,
sweets, ice creams and souvenirs. The Shop’s garden offers an idea
venue for picnics, and ample (paid) car parking is nearby.
The Branch runs a full programme of social or fund-raising
events from September to May (but not December) usually on the last Friday of
the month (see Attractions & Events page for details).
The Branch Committee
takes an active interest in planning issues that might have an impact
on the beauty and accessibility of the Canal. Although the Branch
does not operate its own trip boat, Branch members are keen to undertake
any tasks, such as Canal Clean-up Days, that enhance the canal.
A major annual event is the Reading Waterfest, which the Branch
organizes jointly with Reading Borough Council; this year's event
takes place on Saturday 25th June at Chestnut Walk, behind the Abbey
Ruins and Forbury Gardens, and offers all the fun of the fair combined
with a large boat-gathering (10.00 to 17.00 hours).
New members are always welcome, and if you would like to join
the Branch or take an active part in Branch activities, do contact
any member of the Committee.
