The Barbara Mclellan Trip Boat

M. V. Barbara McLellan

M.V. Barbara McLellan is a broad beam narrowboat built in 1982 and was specifically designed for leisure cruising. She is 65 feet long with a beam of 10.5 feet. She weighs 25 tons and has a 4.2 litre marinised diesel tractor engine. The main cabin is spacious, with seating at tables for 40 passengers and a maximum seating capacity of 51. The boat has a licensed bar, a fully equipped galley and a small dance floor with sliding roof which can be opened in fine weather. The boat has a lift for wheelchair access and modern toilet facilities.

We run the following trips from the Wharf Cottage, Bradford on Avon:

  • Public Trips at Weekends, Public Holidays and Wednesday afternoons.
  • Special Trips such as Cream Teas, Bath Trip, Autumn Tints, Santa Trips, etc can be booked as advertised on the dates throughout the year.
  • Charter Trips fully crewed trips can be booked for 1 – 5 hours.

M.V. Barbara McLellan is named after the late Mrs Barbara McLellan. In 1999 the Kennet & Avon Canal Trust needed to replace the West Wilts Branch narowboat Ladywood and approached the The McLellan Trust for financial assistance. This Trust is a small Charitable Trust set up from the estate of the late Mrs Barbara McLellan, providing donations to help in broad terms, the elderly, the disabled, and the disadvantaged, as well as protecting wild birds. Fortunately for us, in 1999 the Trustees decided that they should donate to capital projects rather than just distributing income and they graciously decided to fund the purchase of Aquarius, then plying on the River Cam, in Cambridge. In appreciation of this generosity and in memorial of the benefactor, the boat was renamed Barbara McLellan. We, therefore, particularly welcome enquiries for any charters from groups organising recreational trips for members of disadvantaged groups

Contact the K&A Wharf Cottage Shop for further information and tickets for Public Trips on 01225 868683, or the Booking Manager for Special and Charter Trip bookings on 0800 121 4679.

Special Trips 2008

We run a number of Special Trips throughout the year and, unless stated otherwise, they all depart from the Cottage Wharf, Bradford on Avon:

Devizes. Over the weekend 18-21 April MV Barbara McLellan will make a publicity cruise to and from Devizes on 4 separate day trips. Passengers, who should bring their own picnic lunches, may join the boat at any of the start points at BOA, Foxhangers or Devizes. The boat trips are free of charge, however, donations to the K & A Canal Trust would be appreciated.

Strawberry Cream Teas. Sailings on Fri 20th Jun, 11th Jul and 1st August at 3.00 pm.

On this extremely popular trip you will be served home-made scones with strawberry jam and fresh cream and a cup of tea at your table. Relax and enjoy the scenery on the 1¾ hr sail, down through the Lock, past the Tithe Barn, along the attractive Avon Valley and over the 100 metre long Avoncliff Aqueduct. There the boat turns round and returns to the Wharf at 4.15 pm.

Bath Trips. Sailings on Sat 14th June, 9th August and 6th September. Departs BOA at 9.30 am, arriving in Bath 1.30 pm. Departs Bath at 3.00 pm, arriving in BOA at 7.00 pm.

There is choice of either a One or Two-way Bradford on Avon to Bath trip. The boat crosses the Avoncliff and Dundas Aqueducts and you will enjoy superb views of the Avon Valley and the approaches to Bath. An excellent Ploughman's is served on the way out and a sumptuous Cream Tea on return trip.

Wharf Day. [To be confirmed] It is hoped to hold an open day at the wharf on Saturday 23rd August with various stalls, a boat parade and short 1-hour trips during the day.

Autumn Tints. See the turning of the autumnal leaves on a trip along the Avon Valley and through the wood of Murhill and Limpley Stoke. There are two Saturday afternoon trips planned for 18th and 25th October, departing at 2 pm.

Dundas Carol Service. The annual Boaters’ Carol Service on the first Saturday in December is always a popular event. The boat leaves BOA mid-afternoon on 6th December, arriving at Dundas in plenty of time for the Carol Service. Passengers should bring a savoury or sweet plate to be shared in open buffet supper on the return journey.

Santa Trips. The 1-hour long Santa trips are extremely popular, so book early. The trips leave BOA at 11:30am and 1:30pm on 6th December and 11:30am and 2:00pm on 7th, 13th, 14th, 20th and 21st December. Santa gives an individually selected present to each child who also receives juice and sweets. The adults receive mulled wine and a mince pie.
