Antigua W.I.

Our first holiday together, our honeymoon in fact was to the beautiful island of Antigua, nestled within the Caribbean's Leeward Islands. The W.I. stands for West Indies by the way and not Women's Institute .... before you ask.

We stayed at the Hawksbill Beach Hotel, a fantastic hotel where the al-fresco restaurant overlooked the Caribbean Sea, the perfect place to watch the sun go down. The locals say that when the sun finally disappears below the horizon there is a green flash to be seen ... although despite sitting out almost every night watching the sunset to the sound of the water lapping onto the shore, we were never lucky enough to see it ... or perhaps the joke was on us.

Places to visit include the capital St. Johns, where the West Indies Ice Company (that's Diamonds to you and me) and Columbian Emerald shops can all be found, Nelson's Dockyard, used by the Royal Navy during the French Wars and named after Admiral Nelson, and of course the customary "Island Tour"

We had a great time in Antigua, the weather, hotel, food, people were all superb, although there was the story of the cow trying to eat its way in to our room .....
