We awoke on the second morning of our Israel/Egypt mini cruise in Port Said. From here were were taken by coach to Cairo, under armed police escort .... the tour representative hadn't mentioned when we booked the trip that several coach tours had been attacked recently on the journey between Port Said and Cairo!
Our first stop in Cairo was the Egyptian Museum to see the fabulous
Tutankhamen exhibition, which was worth the trip alone .... words just can't describe it. The
Egyptian people are extremely protective of the artefacts and flash photography is not allowed, hence no photographs, but if you get the chance to go, it's fabulous.
From here we went to Giza to see the Pyramids and I took the opportunity of going right into the centre of one of the larger ones. Chris quite sensibly stayed outside in the 45 degree temperatures and fed the camels. Believe me, the inside of a pyramid is a very uninspiring sight, resist the temptation if you are ever given the opportunity.
Our final port of call was the Sphinx, again one of those things, like the pyramids and the
Tutankhamen exhibits which just blows your mind ... then back to the SS Salamis Glory for the overnight voyage back to Limassol
Despite thoroughly enjoying our day in Cairo, it has to be said that it is a very dirty and overpopulated city with little in the way of drainage. People actually live in the gutters and the driving is something else, it makes Italy look good. It was interesting to note that, according to the tour guide, the two most expensive
apartments in Cairo were owned by belly dancers!
