Maldives

2003

This was our third visit to the Maldives and the first time we have ever gone back to a hotel we have stayed in before.

We had planned to go to Dubai this year, but the terrorist attacks on Saudi Arabia just before we went made us wonder if now was the best time to visit the Middle East, so we opted to change our destination at the last minute to the Maldives.

Paradise Island (Lankanfinolhu) is situated in North Male Atoll, about 15 minutes by speedboat from the Airport. June is the wettest month of the year, making it the quietest time to visit the Maldives and in 14 days we only lost just over a day to monsoon like storms. It's a price worth paying when you think that of the 260 rooms on the island, there were only 175 guests staying.

We stayed in a water-bungalow this year, perched above the Indian Ocean on stilts, with its own steps down into the Ocean and a private sun terrace, a perfect location for watching the tropical fish in the water below or simply taking in the rays.

Everything was as we remembered from 1999 with first class food and service from the hotel, superb sunsets and a laid back and friendly atmosphere. We are already hoping to go back in a couple of years ... it really is "Paradise" Island.

We flew with Emirates again, but decided to push the boat out this year and fly Business Class to give Chris some extra legroom. Its not hard to tell why Emirates continually win "Airline of the Year", they were superb and definitely the best airline we have ever flown with.
