HMS Zulu Tribal History Interact! Resources

Type 81 'Tribal' Class Frigate "HMS Zulu" was laid down by Alex Stephens & Sons of Govan on the 13th of December 1960 and launched on 3rd July 1962. She was commissioned on 17th April 1964.

Of the seven Tribal class built, Zulu was the only one commissioned with quadruple Seacat Surface-to-Air (SAM) missile launchers. The other six vessels were completed with two 40mm Bofor guns and were fitted with Seacat during refits. Tribal were the first Royal Navy frigates built to operate a helicopter. You can just make out the Wasp at her stern.

Zulu was refitted at Chatham to take part in the Falklands war but saw no action. She was decommissioned at Portsmouth on 31st March 1984.

On 2nd May 1985, she was recommissioned in the Indonesian Navy as the Martha Kristina Tiyahahu.

Here she is in 1983, prior to decommissioning. You can just make out a Wasp on the flight deck. This picture courtesy of Geoff Chalcroft, Radio Supervisor in Zulu form 1983 - 84.

Here's a blow-up of HMS Zulu, showing the Wasp more clearly on its pad. We believe this Wasp to be 442

Many thanks to Billy Swan for the use of his picture.
