REPORTS BY ALAN JONES |
Monarchs take Norfolk's record
22
June 2004
Leicester Monarchs travelled to Norwich on
Sunday to take on fellow championship chasers
Norfolk - Alan Jones reports
Leicester Monarchs picked up their third away
win of the season after beating Norfolk by 100
points to 78 on Sunday.
With both sides chasing the league leaders
Horspath, this was an important match and the
result ensured that Leicester moved into second
place in the table.
Though it was a less than confident start for
the Monarchs who found themselves behind after
three heats, they soon gained their composure to
finish strongly to take Norfolk’s unbeaten home
record.
Leicester’s World Champion, David Hemsley led
the way with five wins and he received good
support from Mark Whitehead, Nigel Wragg and Jim
Waring.
Leicester scorers: Mark Whitehead 15+2, Mark
Newey 14+1, David Hemsley 20, Norman Venson 7+1,
Kevin Burns 11, Craig Marchant 9+1, Jim Waring
10+3 and Nigel Wragg 14+1.
Leicester’s combination team moved one
step nearer to winning the league after securing
a 67 points to 59 victory against Norfolk.
No visiting team had previously won at the
Norwich track but the Monarchs set about the
task with confidence that comes with being
league leaders.
Buoyed by two early maximums, Leicester held the
upper hand and secured the two match points
before the final heat on a track that many of
them were riding for the first time.
Tom Sensicall turned in another top class
performance along with Nicky Whitehead, Rob
Jones, Declan Crouch and James Harrison also
making telling contributions.
Leicester scorers:
Nicky Whitehead 11+2, Rob Jones 11, Paul Hunt 8,
Declan Crouch 12, James Harrison 11+1, Tom
Sensicall 13+2 and Robbie Venson 1.
