First Team Report

Southampton 81 Leicester 92

Leicester Monarchs preserved their unbeaten record away from home in the British Premier League with a 92 - 81 win at Southampton on Sunday.

Leicester were without Mark Newey one of their high scoring riders and knew that they had to win if they were to maintain their position at the top of the league table.

As the match unfolded the destination of the league points were never in doubt as the Monarchs established an early lead and fended off the persistent challenges of the home team.

Lukasz Nowacki, David Hemsley and Craig Marchant were on the top of their game winning vital races during the course of the meeting.

Whilst these three formed a powerful trio it was the performances further down the line that made the difference through the riding of Daniel Pike, Kevin Burns, Mark Whitehead, Norman Venson and Paul Hunt who weighed in with telling contributions to keep Leicester on course in their bid for league and cup honours this season.

The Monarchs are back in action this weekend when they face Poole at Slater Street in a British Premier League fixture with the first race starting at 2pm.

Leicester scorers:  Lukasz Nowacki 18, David Hemsley 17+1, Mark Whitehead 10+2, Daniel Pike 12+2, Norman Venson 9+2, Kevin Burns 9+1, Craig Marchant 17+1 and Paul Hunt 5

Combination Team Report

Southampton 68 Leicester 62

The Monarchs, who were unbeaten in all competitions away from home, dropped their first league points of the season at Southampton.  Weakened by injury and unavailability, the team gave a commendable performance, finally going down by 62 points to 68.

Tom Sensicall was on form, dropping just one point to an opponent and with Declan Crouch and Paul Hunt also amongst the points Leicester were always in with a chance but Southampton just had the edge in the race for the minor positions to keep in front.

Leicester scorers: Declan Crouch 14, Ben Holloway 5+1, Tom Sensicall 15, Robbie Venson 5, Paul Hunt 14, Lucy Whitehead 9.
