Brief history
After graduating from the University of Reading with a BSc honours degree in Estate Management in 1972, John Lytton spent 13 years in the Inland Revenue Valuation Office, 4 ½ years with Permutt Brown & Co Chartered Surveyors (LondonW1) and 18 months with Cubitt & West (surveyors and estate agents in Hampshire, Surrey and Sussex). In January 1988 he set up the practice of John Lytton & Co, Chartered Surveyors and this was incorporated in 2009 as John Lytton & Co Ltd.
What we do
• Aim to give a personal and confidential consultancy service to mainly private sector clients based on integrated knowledge of property usage and potential, physical condition, the limitations of ownership, planning, property law, and valuation
• Undertake taxation related property valuations, one-off and ?difficult? situations and the long-term reorganisation of property assets and the negotiation of acquisitions and disposals.
• Act in party wall and boundary disputes, rights of way, easements and contentious property matters
• Advise on strategic land and building use, policy development and forward planning
• We have a track record of dealing with historic buildings and Sites of Special Scientific Interest, Scheduled Ancient Monuments and of planning issues in Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, National Parks and other protected areas
• We aim to be practical and keep issues simple

BIOGRAPHICAL AND PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND
Since 1988 John Lytton has practised as John Lytton & Co (now John Lytton & Co Limited), Chartered Surveyors, dealing with a wide range of property consultancy including: Commercial and Residential Survey and Valuation; Development; Strategic Planning and Strategic Property Advice; advice on Historic Buildings; specialist advice on Boundary and Party Wall matters.
His first professional appointment was with the Inland Revenue Valuation Office. Prior to setting up his own business John Lytton was an associate partner with Permutt Brown & Co, Consultant Surveyors and Valuers of London W1.
His past professional activities also include:
Expert Witness in civil actions; Rating Appeals before the Valuation Tribunal; giving evidence in Public Enquiries; preparation of Expert Report; advice on Planning Applications, enquiries and appeals; specialist consultancy on Boundaries, Party Walls, Rights of Way and Easements; Historic Building Consultancy; energy use of buildings; Alternative Energy and ‘Green Solutions’ including drainage systems; adaption, conversion and modernisation of traditional buildings; Records of Condition; Surveys and Valuations.

John Lytton is also a member of The Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, of the Institute of Revenues Rating and Valuation, an Honorary Fellow of the Association of Building Engineers. He is a former Chairman, Leasehold Enfranchisement Advisory Service.
John Lytton’s Parliamentary Career (1985-1999) commenced as a hereditary independent (Crossbench) Peer in the House of Lords in succession to his father. He took an active role in debates on the Local Government Finance Act 1988, business rates, environmental legislation, Land Drainage, Treasure trove, Leasehold Reform, Countryside Commission/English Nature merger, Local Government Reorganisation, Coal Industry, National Parks. Particular interests include communities and local government finance, Countryside Conservation and Agricultural policies, the rural economy, Town and Country Planning, Compensation and Property Taxation. He sponsored the Party Wall etc Bill (now the Act of 1996) through parliament.
