Documentation Standard
Section 3.1 - Model Text
- An appendix, identified by the heading "APPENDIX"
contains supplementary information at the end of the document
and bound integrally with it. An appendix is used to append large
(multi-page) data tables, plans pertinent to the submittal of
the configuration item, management plans pertinent to the subject
of the specification, classified information or other information
or requirement related to the subject configuration item, material,
or process that would, by its bulk or content, tend to degrade
the usefulness of the document. In all cases where an appendix
is used, reference to the appendix shall be included in the body
of the document. A table of contents and a cover for the appendix
shall not be used.
- 3.1.22.1.1 Numbering
and titling.
- 3.1.22.2 Index.
- An alphabetical index may be placed at the end
of a document to permit ready reference to contents. Its use shall
be limited to lengthy documents. If used, an index follows the
basic document and before any appendix. The pages are numbered
continuously following the last page of the basic document or
appendix, as applicable. The document identifier shall appear
in the upper centre of each page.
The index shall be designed to enable "ease of use"
to the user by:
- listing topics a user may need to find;
- providing a number of options of sections and
pages for each topic.
- If possible, entries for several references should
be displayed as sub-entries for clarity.
If the length of entries permits, the index should be arranged
in two or three columns on the page. The references should be
placed close to the entries.
The text of an index may be set in a smaller type size than the
text used in the main body of a document to reduce the number
of pages needed.
