Navigation
Navigation links appear at the top of each page. A link is provided to skip these links. Alternatively, you can make use of the access keys detailed in the next paragraph.
Pages contain a number of link rel elements for navigation purposes in text-only browsers and screen readers. There is a link to the sitemap (contents) and links going to the next or previous page where appropriate.
Mozilla users can also use this feature by going to the View menu, Show/Hide, Site Navigation Bar, Show Only As Needed (or Show Always). Opera 7 should show the links as required, but if they do not appear, the feature can be turned on by going to View, Navigation Bar, Auto (or a permanent on-screen position).
Access Keys
The site is provided with the following access keys:
- 1 for link to home page.
- 2 for link to site map.
- 3 for link to content of the page, i.e to skip the navigation links.
- 4 for link to related pages.
- 5 for link to top of the page.
- 0 for link to this page.
The way you use access keys varies from browser to browser, and with your operating system. In Windows with Internet Explorer or Mozilla, for example, you press alt + key, and on the Macintosh you press Control + an access key. In Opera, you use Shift + Esc and then the key. The result of doing this varies between browsers. (For example, in Internet Explorer and Windows, you are taken to the link, and you have to activate it; in Firefox, the link is followed automatically.) Please check your browser help for details.
Images
All content images used in this site include alt attributes. Many have Title attributes. Some of the cartoons have "longdesc" attributes, and separate links following for the benefit of those users whose browsers do not support longdesc. Images used for spacing purposes have an alt attribute of " ".
Visual design
- The site uses cascading style sheets for visual layout
- Relative font sizes are used to ensure fonts can be resized.
- If a browser or browsing device does not support stylesheets, or they are turned off, the content of each page is still readable. The page is not dependent on the visual design for meaning.
Style sheets
An alternative style sheet without the "column layout" is provided on this site. If you have javascript and cookies enabled, you can use one of the links at the bottom of each page to choose the alternative style sheet, which will be available for the rest of the session. (There is also a printer-friendly version which does not have the links.) Alternatively, if you use Firefox, Mozilla or Opera, you can select an alternative stylesheet without the need to enable Javascript or cookies. However, in that case you will need to do it for each page.
