McLAREN COMMUNITY LEISURE
CENTRE
Location: CALLANDER, CENTRAL SCOTLAND Client: STIRLING DISTRICT COUNCIL Value: £3.5m Status: COMPLETED DECEMBER 1998
Designed and
executed in partnership with GAIA Architects (Edinburgh)
this ground-breaking development provides modern sports
facilities for the local community and caters for the
requirements of the local McLaren High School in Callander.
A swimming pool, sports hall, gymnasium and other facilities
are housed by an experimental design incorporating "Dynamic
Insulation" - a form of breathing construction which dramatically
reduces Carbon Dioxide emissions through reduced space
heating and ventilation operations.
The centre was the first major building in the UK to utilise
this design and remains the largest building in the world
employing this method. Experimental data is still being
gathered, confirming the success of the approach and enhancing
the reputation of this popular building. Whilst the scale
is rooted in the local vernacular, the modern proportions
and forms create a striking building in a dramatic landscape.
