Mediation:

·          helps people to settle differences or arguments quickly, peacefully and confidentially

·          supports people in communicating clearly, building relationships and repairing damage done by disputes. Unlike legal proceedings, successful mediation produces only winners.

Case Study

Mr. & Mrs. M. and Mr. & Mrs. B. had been getting on incredibly badly for years and had reached the point where they could not bear to see each other. Complaints of noise, abuse and intimidation were made. Both were adamant that they would never talk to each other in the same room.

We visited and talked to them separately, listening to their experiences, clarifying the important issues and helping them to decide on a range of options open to them. One of these was mediation.

They agreed to let us carry messages between them to enable them to communicate what had been upsetting about their neighbour’s behaviour. Both sides were shocked and angered when each made the same accusations. They demanded to talk directly to each other to sort it out.

As misunderstandings and wrong assumptions were cleared up, anger and shouting were gradually replaced by listening and talking. The two sides agreed how they would behave with each other in future and what they would do if any more problems came up.

They left in the same car.......
