We deliberately restrict the number of clients we work with. Typically, they are business owners, senior executives or in the professions. Solicitors and accountants are also happy to refer their own clients to us. Whatever their profession, clients tend to be financially successful and prudent, open to new ideas, and confident decision-makers.
Our ideal client is a private individual who:
- Seeks to provide the best for their families now and in the future
- Has a realistic world view and understands that ‘get-rich-quick’ schemes don’t work
- Has little interest or time to devote to investment matters and wants to avoid technical discussion
- Selects advisers for their high degree of practical expertise, trust, and confidentiality

In order to ensure that we serve our clients to the best of our abilities and in most cases exceed their expectations, we must limit the number of new clients that retain us each year. The following is a schedule of the basic minimum requirements to begin a relationship with Michael Barr & Co.
You only need to satisfy one of the following:
- An investment portfolio of £500,000 within 12 months or:
- Satisfy a minimum fee of £5,000 per year for planning and investment management.
- Anticipated £1,000,000 portfolio within 5 years (£2,500 per year minimum fee applies).
- Portfolio of £250,000 and minimum annual savings of £25,000 per year (£2,500 per year minimum fee applies).
- Annual savings of approximately £100,000 (£1,500 per year minimum fee applies).
- Immediate family member of a client with a portfolio over £500,000 (£1,500 per year minimum fee applies.)
- Immediate family member of a client with portfolio over £2,500,000 (no minimum applies).
Our engagement may be terminated at any time. We do not charge a termination fee.
Fee Schedule
To ensure that our interests remain aligned with our clients, our compensation is not based upon commissions or transactions. Our objective is to always make recommendations solely in the client's best interest. We are paid only by the client. We do not accept commissions, referral fees, or any other type of third- party compensation.
For most clients, reasonable levels of investment planning and financial planning advice as described in the appropriate sections of this web site are included in our investment advisory fee described below. This includes a comprehensive retirement analysis and an assessment of current estate documents. Our fee schedule is as follows and we add VAT:
Investment Planning & Portfolio Design, Portfolio Implementation, Monitoring & Reporting:
- First £1,000,000.................................1.00%
- Next £2,000,000.................................0.75%
- Next £5,000,000.................................0.60%
- Next £5,000,000.................................0.50%
- Amounts over £13,000,000.................0.20%
In order to cover the costs of migrating existing assets to Michael Barr & Co we may require an initial fee.
All the fees are subject to VAT.
Clients benefit from the low cost investment strategies we adopt, so the total cost of investing through us can be substantially less than investing through retail investment funds, and significantly better than others who pay high initial commissions for advice.
