Mellt:- From the ancient Celts - the Celtic god of lightning

"Power and grace served by an iron hand in a velvet glove"

The Mellt is our entry level floor standing model, sharing much of the Artios' sound quality but adding much more scale and authority. The sound from this model is much larger than one has a right to expect from such a relatively small cabinet.

Expanding upon the Artios' vocal and acoustic prowess the Mellt offers its listener further insight into the whole frequency spectrum and is capable of delivering low bass in a fast and controlled manner. No matter what music you throw at this little wonder it will deliver. Whether you want to hear the glory of a complete orchestra in full flight or the bass rich delivery of modern rock the Mellt will not let you down.

The whole ensemble is laid out in front of you with no single instrument or voice taking more space than the producer had intended. Close your eyes and let the music take you direct to where the musicians laid down their emotions onto the recording medium. You should be excused for forgetting you were listening to a recording and not the live event.

Some history

The Mellt came late in the development of the range of loudspeakers available from Mowgan Audio. We knew we had a winner in the form of the Artio, but we also knew that the limited bass output of the Artio would be seen by many as a weakness. We had the option of giving a "bigger" bass from the Artio but chose not to do so as it compromised the lucidity and musicality of the midrange and as with many things in life a compromise had to be struck. It was while contemplating the Artio that the idea for a "bigger Artio" came to mind and so the Mellt was born.

We have used the same drive units for the mid bass and tweeter as used in the Artio and another 7" dedicated bass unit to provide the power and depth that people were wanting. The crossover and the port and box tuning are all different to the Artio so while they are similar across the important midrange and treble they are completely different animals in the bass region!

The relatively small cabinet will surprise even the most demanding bass lover, while those in the know will appreciate that this is not all boom and bang! The Mellt is designed for the average living room typically 3 meters by 4 meters, but we have had it working successfully in rooms as small as 2.5 meters by 3 meters and as large as 5 meters by 9 meters and it performs equally as well in either.

Technical Specification

Mellt: 2.5 way bass reflex with specially sourced 7" honeycombed cone bass and mid-bass unit that provides excellent speed and ultra low distortion with reasonable power handling and low compression. The tweeter utilises an optimally shaped diaphragm that gives well-controlled behaviour through the entire high frequency band. This diaphragm is produced a proprietary material. The process pre-coats the fabric 4 times with a damping/sealing material, resulting in excellent acoustic performance.

Technical Specification The crossover is the heart of any loudspeaker system, while it would not be true to say that a crossover could make a bad driver sound good, it would be equally true to say that a wrongly designed crossover could make the best drivers available today sound terrible.

We at Mowgan spend the majority of our time on the crossover design this not only has an impact on sound quality but also how it behaves on the supporting amplifier. Avoidance of huge phase swings and impedance swings helps dynamics and timing across the frequency range, while the crossover components themselves can affect sibilance and dynamic behaviour under high volume use.

A little understood factor is the Cabinet design. We use the latest in CAD software to do frequency distribution across the cabinet bracing sections, we then confirm this by using accelerometer measurements to ensure the minimum of additional sound entering the room.
