Some history
While we could have invested huge sums of money in developing our own drive units, it would have been a huge development cost and steep learning curve for us here at Mowgan. We had neither the financial ability or the time to fully learn the complexities of drive unit manufacture, we did however reach a compromise. From years of testing with off the shelf units we knew what the likely differences were likely to be when subtle changes were made to things like diaphragm geometry, motor construction and cone material . So we started with what we thought to be some of the best off the shelf drivers available today and we either worked with the manufacturer to amend these slightly to our own specification or we bought them and modified them ourselves. The results are clear to be heard in our range from the Artio up.
The Mabon has been a labour of love for us at Mowgan, while both company directors have used Ogmas in their reference systems for a some time now, we had eventually to back down to the fact that our spouses demanded a little more room than the Ogmas allowed. The Mabons therefore had to be an exceptional loudspeaker, and as these were to be our own source of music we wouldn't accept anything less than near perfect. As with all of our cabinets the Mabons are machined using high precision CNC routers before being assembled and veneered by hand. The cabinet is essentially two cabinets in one, with the midrange unit residing in its' own enclosure within the main cabinet. This allows us to separate the midrange cone from the internal pressures generated by the bass unit, and to apply a different level of damping as demanded by the different drive units themselves. The cabinets are shaped to provide an aesthetic appeal which looks to have less depth than they actually do while the internal shape helps with standing wave dispersal. To aid the control of unwanted flexing of the cabinet under load the cabinet is braced with 4 braces, while dampening material of different thicknesses and compliance is used in different areas of the cabinet itself.
