Youth Sailing At Toddbrook 2008
With a strong Easterly wind, peppered by vicious gusts, and
with overcast conditions combined with single figure temperatures throughout
Saturday 19th April, the young sailors from Derbyshire Youth Sailing were
severely tested by the conditions at Toddbrook Sailing Club, in the second
event of the ten event DYS series for 2008.
See event reports and photos at Yachts
And Yachting and Dinghy
Sailing Magazine.
See also the DYS
photos for the event and see additional pictures of the event on our
Gallery Page.
Enterprise Open 2008
A training day was held on Saturday 5th April. Mike Birch supplied
excellent training. Everybody had learnt plenty and a great day was had
by all. Sunday 6th April saw the start of the North West Top Helm Series.
The wind was coming from the north and was between force 1 – 3.
17 boats turned up for the start of race 1. Read the race review at Yachts
And Yachting and see additional pictures of the event on our Gallery
Page.
National Junior 12 Hour Race
2008
Toodbrook Sailing Club entered a team in the National Junior
12 Hour Race at Southport Sailing Club this year. The team came 25th overall,
and won The Under 14 Trophy (well done Harry and Toby!). Not bad for our
first entry in the event as an independent team.
You can find several pictures of the event in our Gallery
and also some pictures taken on the day by Jo Rutherford of Southport
Sailing Club here.
Ocean Youth Trust 2008
It was meant to be a trip for a dozen youngsters on "Greater Manchester
Challenge" with The
Ocean Youth Trust North West. However, late running works on the lock
gates at Liverpool meant that "Greater Manchester Challenge"
was trapped. Instead the kids were taken to Largs on the Firth Of Clyde
for a week on 37" Sunsail yachts. Places visited included The Kyles Of
Bute, Tarbet and Kip Marina.
Whaley Water Weekend 2008
Toddbrook Sailing Club took a stall at the Whaley Water Weekend
in our traditional position next to the tent selling boat trip tickets.
This year we took a Topper dinghy down to the event.
See the report of the event in the Buxton
Advertiser, including a picture of 3 of our youth members with the
Topper.
Our bric-a-brac stall raised over £100 on Saturday towards funding our
youth programme. A big thank you to all the kids and parents who manned
the stall in some terrible weather.
You can find out more about Whaley Water Weekend here.
Winter Walk 2008-9
The walk was 7.5 miles with 1297' of ascent, so it'll be a little more demanding than last year's walk (5.8 miles and 1050'),
but we'll have a break at the pub about 2/3 of the way round.
Lunch was at the Rising Sun pub in Rainow.
The route: start/finish at Lamaload Carpark (GR SJ 976 752) - east towards Andrews Edge then north crossing Todd Brook to Jenkin Chapel -
west via Wagonshaw Brow, Common Barn, B5470 then south to Thornsett Farm to the Rising Sun. Post lunch, SE up Berristal Rd to
Snipe House, the waterworks and Lamaload reservoir.

Glossop And District Sailing Club Junior
Regatta 2007
The club sent a small team to this event at Pennine Sailing
Club on 22nd September 2007. Congratulations to Ben, Josh, Harry and Marcus
for taking part, and in particular to Richard who found a new career in
sand castle building!
You can see some pictures of the event on our Gallery
Page.
John Merricks Sailing Trust Topper
Toddbrook Sailing Club wish to thank John
Merricks Sailing Trust for their kind donation in February 2006, which
has enabled us to purchase Topper sail number 42209 for use within our
junior scheme. The Topper is pictured below being used for youth training
in summer 2007.
National Junior 12 Hour Race
2007
Toodbrook Sailing Club and Etherow
Country Park Sailing Club entered a joint team in the National Junior
12 Hour Race at Southport
Sailing Club this year. The team came a creditable 14th overall on
a rain-soaked day where the wind was mainly SE Force 2/3, with bigger
gusts and rain squalls. Well done to all those who took part in the race
(and of course to the parents who got drenched watching!).
You can see some pictures of the pre-race training and of the event itself
on our Gallery Page, and also read the event
review at
Yachts And Yachting.
New Mills, Marple And District Rotary
Club Topper
Toddbrook Sailing Club are grateful to New
Mills, Marple And District Rotary Club for their kind donation which
has enabled us to provide additional Topper facilities for our junior
members. Pictured below are the 2007 club Commodore, Kevin Law, and one
of our junior members with the sponsored Topper.
Southport 24 Hour Race 2007
Toodbrook Sailing Club entered two teams in this year's 24 Hour
Race at West Lancs Yacht Club. The
"A" team, sailing an Enterprise, came a very creditable 40th
overall, whilst the "B" team, sailing a GP14 and out for fun,
came 66th overall. You can find the official resuts of the race here,
read the event review at Yachts
And Yachting, and also see the write -up at the Southport
Reporter, including some photos of the Toddbrook team. In additon,
Whitehorse Yacht Photography took photos of the event for commercial purposes;
you can find images of the
"A" team and the
"B" team on their site.
Finally, you can also see some pictures taken by Toddbrook members at
the event on our Gallery Page.
Toddbrook Sailing Club Junior Regatta
2007
The club held our annual Junior regatta on Saturday 1st September.
The results of the races can be found here.
Thanks to Etherow juniors for supporting our event and to the family and
club members from both clubs who came along too. Special thanks to everybody
who helped. Hope you all enjoyed the day! See you next year!
You can see some pictures of the event on our Gallery
Page.
Whaley Water Weekend 2007
Toodbrook Sailing Club exhibited at the annual Whaley Water
Weekend on 23rd June 2007. We had a stall at the Whaley Bridge canal basin
selling bric-a-brac in aid of club funds, and also took a Topper to the
event so that adults and children alike could try out the dinghy. We offered
a number of places on a "taster" sailing session at the club that afternoon
which was well attended, with Enterprise and GP14's being used for short
rides round the reservoir. The club house was also open for afternoon
tea and cakes. Pictured below is the stall and the hard pull back up the
hill to the club!
