I first began collecting in the late eighties. I collected the then current range plus older models, mainly superfast but including some regular wheels. By the early nineties I had stopped serious collecting, buying only occasionally (9 models over 8 years!).
In mid 2002 I came across a Matchbox website by chance whilst searching for details about an actual car, and that single event started me collecting again.
I decided to collect all 75 models and the 5 packs released that year and also buy older models when I found them in good condition and at fair prices.
In 2007 the Best Of British Range was release, and I decided to collect these models as well.
By the end of 2007 the distribution of models in the UK broke down completely.
The result of this was that several batches never made it to the shops (as of March 2008 Woolworths have not received any new models since late October 2007).
As I had now missed out on the opportunity to buy several models I changed my collecting policy;
- One of every new casting released
- All single model variations for selected models, mainly classic cars
- 5 packs where sufficient models in the pack match the criteria above
Here we are in 2009, and the situation has now got even worse.
Woolworths has now gone and the supermarkets do not seem to stick with the Matchbox range even when they do start selling it.
It therefore remains to be seen what I manage to collect this year, as in February I am only half way through the 2008 releases.
