Getting
there - by train.
Inter-city
train services to Birmingham arrive at New Street Station. Trains for University
Station on the
Cross City Line, depart every 15 minutes.
The
Biosciences block is located approximately 100m from University
station. Turn left
out of the station, walk down the road, as the road curves around to the left
the Biosciences block will be on your right. Proceed to the T-junction at the
top of this road; turn right, then right again down the approach path, the
Biosciences block entrance will be in front of you through the glass doors. Keep
an eye open for signs directing you to the lecture theatre.
Due
to the horrendous quantity of traffic in Birmingham and the prospect of getting
lost (personal experience!), I would strongly advise participants to travel by
train if possible.
By
road.
Approaching
from the NW or SE along the M6, leave at Junction
6 (signposted Birmingham Central) to join the A38.
At the end of the motorway keep to the right,
go over a flyover
then through three
underpasses to join the A38 Bristol Road.
The University is on your right, 2.5 miles from the city centre.
Approaching
from the SW, Leave the M5 at Junction
4 (signposted Birmingham SW) to join the A38.
The University is on the left of the A38
Bristol Road approx. 8 miles from the motorway.
The
approach to the University from the M40 and M42 through the southern suburbs can
be confusing. It is easier to turn south on the M42 and leave at Junction
1 to join the A38
and then drive north to the campus.

Please note that the classroom for this course
is in the Medical School. However, ensure that you enter the hospital via
the main concourse. (See directions below)

How
to get there.
Enter the
hospital via the main concourse (where the shops are), take the stairs up, walk along the
corridor past X-Ray and the stairs (on
the right) until you find a block of
6 lifts (B Block). Take the lift
and get out on the first floor. Stand
with your back to ward
B1 and walk along the corridor in
front of you, away from the ward. The classroom is Room 1LB5.70, two thirds
of the way down that corridor on the right before the double doors. If you try
to come in any other way then you will hit an endless number of security doors.
Course commences at 09.30
Course finishes at 17.00
Please
note:
·
Parking at UHW is a total
nightmare!!!!!!!!
·
Parking facilities, which
are available to visitors, are expensive.
·
Off site parking is
impossible, all local side streets are resident parking only. (Heavily enforced
by the local police and traffic wardens)
·
Our hosts at UHW strongly
advise travelling to Cardiff by train, then bus/taxi to UHW
as by far the most likely route to be stress free!!!

University
of Exeter
This is a new venue for West Country participants. I
have few experiences of the local geography; the campus appears to be well
signposted. As for Exeter, I was well and truly lost last year.
Therefore, the potential for many of us (especially
me) to get lost
is very high! Good luck.
Assuming that we all manage to arrive at the correct venue the course will
commence at 09.30 and will be held in ;
The Geoffrey Pope laboratory. Stocker Road (see large map of campus at entrance) University of Exeter.
Course commences – 09.30
Course finishes – 17.00
BY ROAD
The M4/M5
links the South West directly to London, the Midlands, South Wales and
the North, including Scotland.
From the East (via M5)
Leave the M5 at
junction 30.
Take the third exit (A379)
and follow the signposted route to the University.
From the West (Via A30):
Leave the A30
at the Dawlish and Marsh Barton
turning. Turn left
at the large roundabout into Alphington Spur,
which becomes Alphington Road.
You will pass through several sets of traffic lights, pass under a railway
bridge, over more traffic lights and then up to a very large roundabout. Leave
at the third exit
(Bonhay Road).
Follow this until just past Exeter St. David's station, where you come to a
small roundabout. Turn sharp right into St.
David's Hill. Take the second left into Hele
Road. At the end of this, turn left again into
New North Road.
Take the second right into Streatham Drive,
fork right into Prince of Wales Road.
Follow this along until it drops into a dip with a right hand bend at the
bottom. Turn left at the bottom of the dip into Stocker
Road.
From the Bus Station
Bus services run from the bus station to the
University campus. Alight at the top of The
Queen's Drive.
BY RAIL
Exeter has two railway
stations - Exeter St. David's (main station) and
Central. Exeter St. David's
Station is approximately 10 minutes walk from the Streatham Campus and taxis are
available.
Directions to the University (Streatham Campus) from
Exeter St. David's Station
The University is located half a mile from St.
David's Station. Leave the station via the main booking hall, and walk across
the forecourt keeping to the right of the car parking area. You will meet Bonhay
Road. Cross over at the zebra crossing. Turn
left, and almost immediately right into a passageway called St.
Clement's Lane. Follow this up the hill; it
comes out on to St. David's Hill. Cross
over and continue up the road opposite (Howell
Road). You will then meet New
North Road. Cross over at the zebra crossing,
and turn left. The next major turning on the right is Streatham
Drive. Take this, and fork left after a short
distance (still called Streatham Drive). You will see a large map of the campus.
I would highly recommend that you
consult the university web site for local maps, parking etc. www.ex.ac.uk/about

Please
note: Parking on
the
University
of
Central Lancaster
campus
has always been exasperating,
fraught with disaster and not worth the effort.
If you decide to risk driving,
a small
prayer to
the great god of motorways
and public
parking areas may
well be in order.
The choice is yours.
Getting
there - by road.
Travelling
North by M6. (also from M61/M62 East).

Hall Lane ends in a T-junction with traffic lights. Turn Right into
London Road
and proceed to first traffic lights at crossroads (Church Street/Ribbleton
Lane). Go straight ahead onto dual carriageway.
4. You
are now on the Preston Road. At the next traffic lights turn
right and immediately left into Walker
Street. (Approaching these lights take
the second lane from the right in order to be in the correct lane to enter
Walker Street). The University is signposted here.
5. Follow
Walker Street to a large roundabout and the University is facing you as you
enter this roundabout
Travelling
South by M6.
Leave the M6 at J32 (M55) and take
exit 1 (A6) to Preston/Garstang.
1. Turn
left from slipway onto A6 to Preston
2. Proceed
through 5 major road junctions with traffic lights.
3. Immediately
after the fifth set of traffic lights take the
right hand lane and bear right at
the sixth set of traffic lights into Moor
Lane. You will be following Liverpool
signs. There is a right filter in operation at these lights.
4. At
the end of Moor Lane you will enter a large roundabout. The University is facing
you when you have passed the first two exit roads on this roundabout.
5. The
entry to the University is across the traffic moving onto the island
from Liverpool so some care is needed.
