Retrofitting Satellite Navigation (satnav) into a Facelift Vauxhall Opel Omega

This is for factory fitted satnav, as fitted to the top of the range Omega Elites, not an after market system. I started off with a GID - Graphics Information Device, then fitted a CID - Colour Information Device as soon as I could get one from eBay. The CID big advantage over the GID is that it has a proper map display, The GID was fitted as standard to the Elite model, with very few opting for the £400 upgrade to the CID.

Ok, what do we need? First of all this “How To” is for facelift Omega’s, that is Omega’s with the double DIN stereo unit, built after 2000. The Omega will also need to be equipped with the Check Control/On Board Computer with the MID display, which thankfully is most of them.

A replacement Head Unit with Sat Nav Functions e.g. a Siemens NCDC 2013 or NCDC 2015 if you want the phone facilities.

A compatible screen either a Graphics Information Device (GID)

GID Part No 24435386 Ident JA

or a Colour Information Device (CID) Part No 24459629 Ident KJ

which was superceded by Part No 24439379* Ident KK Note the second smaller connecter

* My copy of the parts catalogue has this as part no 24439378 but most sellers on eBay use the above part no for the Omega. I fitted the earlier KJ so I can't confirm which one works.

You'll also need a Sat Nav Aerial and some extra wire and connectors.

By far the easiest method of acquiring the above, and the method I used, was to visit a breakers year and remove everything from a donor vehicle. I got all of mine from a 2002 Omega Elite that had been written off. I also stripped out the the loom behind the dash, the BOSE audio amplifier, the rear speakers and rear electric blind and the Park Pilot system.

The other method is www.eBay.co.uk . Don’t forget to also check www.eBay.de as the Omega is very popular in Germany with Sat Nav parts are more frequently found on the German site. It’s always worth checking with the seller before placing a bid that they are happy to ship to the UK.  Don't worry about the display language or Sat Nav voice as both of these are selectable from menus. If you want a Vauxhall Logo rather than an Opel one then this can be changed by Tech2.

One important thing to note is that the screens and unit are coded to each other, and as far as I’m aware they cannot be decoded once they have been separated from each other. They are not coded to the car, but to each other! So you'll need to get a screen and head unit from the same car, or a screen and head unit from different cars that have been de-coded prior to removal from the donor cars, or a brand new screen and head unit that have never been fitted and are still in delivery mode. Basically when you fit the screen/unit if "Display Safe" is flashing on the screen they're in delivery mode and can be married with Tech2. If "Display Safe" is on constantly  the unit is married to another system and cannot be use.

Once fitted, with the exception of screens and head units that came from the same car then they will need marrying together by a Vauxhall dealer using Tech2 before they can be fully used. My local dealer charged by £50 +VAT to do this.

First job is to remove the old head unit and info display. I bought a set of double DIN removal keys here which made the job much easier from here http://www.siocommunications.co.uk/Shopping/view_product.php?product=PC5-110

It’s then necessary to remove ashtray, the radio/air conditioning controls surround and the black plastic part that holds the radio cage in place so you can get at the connector at the back of the cage. I couldn’t get all the connector to separate from the switches on the radio surround, so I just disconnected the ones I could and then moved the trim to one side. You don’t need to remove the cage from the surround. Behind the radio cage/black trim you will find a blue connector which has 3 main areas, an 8 way connector which is for power/ earth etc, another 8 way connector which connects to the speakers and a 36 way connector.  The wiring for the 2 x  8 way connectors is exactly the same and can be left alone, but you’ll need to add a few wires from the 36 way connector up to the new display.

As I was adding the Bose Amp as well it was easier to cut the old connector (the blue one) and add the wires I needed into the connector and wiring I'd salvaged (the grey one). Not for the faint hearted! The NCDC2013/15's can be used with or without the Bose Amp

The instrument cluster also needs removing to give access to connector for the Multi Information Display (MID). This has a 32 way connector and should be grey in colour.

Sorry for the poor quality of this picture, but you'll get the idea.

Bose amp ready for install. Wouldn't want to do this without the correct loom

Radio Connector Layout

GID/CID 32 way Connector

CID 12 Way Connector

To wire a GID in place of the supplied MID you need disconnect from the 32 way connector Pins 9,10,11. Don’t cut them as two of these wires are useful if you want to connect a CID.

Then add the following connections

36 Way Head Unit connector      Colour 32 Way GID/CID Connector
Pin 29 From Reverse Lights Black/White
Pin 25 To GID/CID  White  Pin 11
Pin 26 To Earth  Brown
Pin 32 To GID/CID Green   Pin 10
Pin 33 To GID/CID White Pin 11
  To Earth Brown Pin 32

The grey connector at the back of the MID display can be dismantled by cutting the cable tie and then pressing in the tabs at the bottom of the connector. The cover then slides off to give access to the connections.

To wire the CID you need an extra connector which you will need to source. This is a separate 12 way connector as shown at  the top of this page. Again eBay’s a favourite, try searching for “Stecker” which is German for Connector. I’ve seen a few people selling both 32 way connecters and the additional 12 way connector for the CID on eBay.de. Apparently a Vectra CD-Changer-cable P/N 9196108 has the correct connector and can be used but I’ve not tried that.

The extra CID connector wires as follows

36 Way Head Unit connector      12 way CID Connector
Pin 17   Pin 2
Pin 18 was 32 way pin 9 Pin 2
Pin 19 was 32 way pin 10 Pin 5
Pin 24   Pin 3
Pin 30   Pin 4
Pin 31   Pin 6

Then it’s a case of connecting a Sat Nav Aerial, re-assembling everything, having your local Vauxhall dealer Tech2 the screen and head unit to each other. The wiper stalk is also different, in that the three buttons that were used for the Check Control/Computer are no longer needed. It'll work with the old one, but for completeness I fitted the correct one from an Elite which also added Variable Intermittent Wipers.
